Installed on the 13th!!! The equipment arrives a few days before. I get 384-768K download and 128k upload for $39/mo.

My cable company (Cable ONE) wanted to charge me $50/mo for the internet and an additional $40 for basic service. No way I am paying that much...unless it was a T1.:sexor:

i think we are moving to a $99 plan on our cable company.
Digital cable and like 12 HBO's + Internet.

Do you know if your DSL is fixed at 384 or 768, 'cause usually both ends of dsl are fixed.

i'd consider dsl if getting a 384 up dsl line didnt mean they were gonna rape you when it comes time to pay the bill. :D

gl and anything is faster then your modem at work :D

i made the same mistake with mine and got kb instead of k
big diffrence

just saying this cause the speed seem surprisingly high

Cable modems are typically faster for downloads than most if not all DSL lines, when the cable infrastructure is new or well maintained. However, cable has a few disadvantages to DSL.

The first disadvantage is that cable is an RF network -- this means that it is vulnerable to transient problems "within the network" from RF interference. Since cable is a shared media, there is a possibility that performance may degrade over time as additional households plug in, connect additional devices (videos, game machines) to the TV lines.

A cable company may react slowly to decreases in performance, as they never sell access by speed, or promise consistent speed or latency.

One of the largest disadvantages of cable over DSL is the upstream (return path). Cable companies are using a very narrow band for return signalling, below all the space allocated for TV channels. This band is prone to RF interference and is very limited in capacity. Upstream transmissions may therefore compete with others in the area, get delayed (suffer high latency) due to noise fighting techniques, and cable Terms Of Service typically prohibit any kind of constant upstream use. Internet use is shifting away from central servers broadcasting to many individuals and some interesting peer to peer applications are appearing (games, voice and video applications, communal libraries). These applications need a strong upstream channel.

In summary, cable modems are currently good value and strong competition for residential casual use, often available more cheaply and far faster than their ADSL competition. However, DSL is probably the more future-proof system, offering digital direct from the internet infrastructure.. If your DSL ISP is on the ball, your performance in either direction will not be different from peak hour to early morning, and DSL lines are available for a wide variety of purposes, both business and residential.

my dsl is supposedly 128kbps up too, but i get 200kbps all the time when i'm FTPing to the Duke server.

if you're planning on playing any online games make sure it's fastpath dsl, as the other kind (what i have) will add about 50ms to your ping. not that it annoys me.

well i can have 3 people on my FTP on my house and maintain anywhere from 30-65k upload on my cable modem.
of course there are all old people in my neighbourhood, so no one has PCs so road runner is fast as hell.
if your in an area that doesn have a lot of RR customsers your connection will ROCKSor your BoxSor.

it all depens on location too, some cable areas suck others are good, same with DSL.

what sucks about DSL is that you have to be in an area that has a good phone system (aka alot of central hubs)....I'm about 6 miles from the nearest center so my DSL connection would be considerably worse then my Cable. DSL around here is $50 and I only pay $39.99 for my Cable Internet. Once the phone companies upgrade their lines across the board ... they'll be a force to be reckoned with in the broadband industry. Until then...Cable is the cheapest and most available service for residential internet.

I'm really glad this topic came up. My boss just offered to pay for DSL (up to $40 of it) for us field engineers working out of the house.
However the rub is this, I cannot get DSL. I can get $40 paid towards an ISDN unmeasured $80/mo line but this is 128Kb up and 128Kb down, no more no less. I guess they can garantee 128K with the two bonded 64K lines.
My question is this:
How much worse off is ISDN than you guys with DSL getting bursts of 768K?

xdsl > cable > isdn

:D

isdn is down the list, but mostly 'cause it cant reach the speeds of the others.

My cable used to own all other connections, 'cept business lines, till they capped it.

Haven't really had a problem with my cable, and all my neighbors have it. People get consistent 40-45K download speeds from my FTP server, and I can simultaneously pull 300K download speeds from M$ on my other PC.

That's outrageous for basic cable, though, LP. I think we're paying $12/mo through Time Warner for lifeline cable, and I'm paying $45/mo for RR.

Awesome,
At&T now offers local telephone service in California. Their website said DSL wasn't available so I decided to call them. They checked their system and it IS available! So in order to get DSL I have to switch over my local service to ATT (an extra $3.00/mo).

schweet! 1.5Mb down 384Kb up!!!! 10 - 15 business days I'll be a fastor fuxor.
